Massachusetts TeamWalk Connection for
people concerned with Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia (HSP) or
Primary Lateral Sclerosis (PLS)
August 20; Lexington, Massachusetts
Meet others concerned with HSP or PLS, share
stories and concerns, have fun and take us one step closer to the cure!
Connection Picnic
Bring your lawn chairs and snacks or lunch and gather at 11:00
on the lovely grounds of the Lexington Visitors Center for an HSP-PLS
Connection. Meet with others managing life with HSP or PLS, share your stories
and concerns and enjoy time together. Plenty of parking is available in the
immediate area. Visitors Center: 1875 Massachusetts Avenue; phone:
781-862-1450.
Right on the grounds, you can also visit the
Lexington Visitor’s
Center, which features an historical diorama and gift shop (there is an
accessible bathroom). You can take a tour of
Buckman Tavern,
the residence in which Samuel Adams and John Hancock awoke to
hear Paul Revere's famous warning that British troops were on their way. Colonial Minutemen gathered in this tavern, under command of
Captain Parker, before confronting the British on the Lexington Green on April
19, 1775. Note: The tavern is not fully accessible.
TeamWalk For Our Cures walkathon
At 1:00, walk, stroll or roll in a group TeamWalk around the famous Lexington
Battle Green. Participate as much as you desire from 1-5 loops. This is where
"the first blood was spilt in the dispute with Great Britain" in 1775.
Seventy-seven Minutemen faced British Regulars
and eight Minutemen lost their lives. Take your photo at the
Minuteman Statue (Captain Parker) or at one of the other historical monuments on or near the Battle
Green.
Our TeamWalk is a walkathon to raise funds for research. It is a pre-paid event.
You collect sponsorships for your participation in the event, not distance walked. Visit our
Tips page for fundraising tips and a Sample Letter. Use
this Sponsorship Form
to keep track of your sponsors and mail it in with your donations one week ahead
of the TeamWalk (bring late sponsorships with you). All funds raised through
TeamWalk will support SPF Research Awards.
Optional Activity
After the TeamWalk, if desired, you can take the
Liberty Ride 90-minute
guided bus tour
of Lexington and Concord. See the birthplaces of American liberty and 19th
century literature! Ride along as your costumed
guide recounts the events of April 19, 1775 and the literary legacy that defined
American identity. The Lexington Visitor's Center is one of the bus stops so you
can purchase your ticket and board there.

Why Your Support Matters
There is currently no treatment to prevent, stop or reverse
the degenerative process in PLS or HSP. These diseases attack
one’s ability to walk, often leaving their victims in
wheelchairs. They can also rob people of the ability to use
their hands and arms, and ,even to speak or cause other neurological problems as well. The
Spastic Paraplegia Foundation is the only organization in the Americas that is
dedicated to raising funds specifically for HSP and PLS
research. The organization is 100% volunteer-managed and the
TeamWalk For Our Cures is the national, community event to
raise funds for research.
